Small white Matter microplastic filter device attached to back of washing machine

EU May Require Microplastic Filters on All Washing Machines

🤯 Mind Blown

A Bristol startup created a simple filter that stops 97% of plastic fibers from entering oceans every time you do laundry. New EU laws could soon require them on every washing machine.

Every time you wash your favorite fleece or yoga pants, tiny plastic fibers break off and flow straight into rivers and oceans. But a simple device about the size of a shoebox could stop millions of tonnes of this invisible pollution from ever leaving your home.

Matter, a Bristol startup, has developed a filter that catches microplastics before they enter the water supply. The device connects to the back of any existing washing machine in under 10 minutes and traps 97% of plastic particles as small as one sixth the width of a human hair.

The scale of the problem is staggering. Around 60% of all clothing today is made from synthetic fabrics, which are essentially plastic. Every wash releases about a gram of microplastics per load.

In the UK alone, that adds up to 16 tonnes entering the water every single day. Across Europe's 100 million households, the numbers climb even higher.

"Think of your washing machine like a cheese grater," explains Adam Root, Matter's CEO. "It's slowly abrading all these pieces of plastic and turning them into tiny pieces that go down into our water."

These particles don't just disappear. They act like tiny pills carrying chemical pollutants into the organisms that absorb them, including the phytoplankton and zooplankton that produce most of Earth's oxygen and sequester more carbon than all our forests combined.

Standard washing machine filters have holes around five millimeters wide, designed only to catch coins and buttons. Matter's filter is different, capturing particles 500 times smaller.

The device requires emptying about once a month, signaled by a simple indicator light. Root emphasizes it shouldn't change how people do laundry at all.

The Ripple Effect

Matter is now selling in 11 countries and expanding to 22 by year's end. The company partnered with major appliance brands to reach scale quickly, a process Root describes as challenging but ultimately beyond their dreams.

Recognition as an Earthshot Prize finalist last year brought the innovation to 34 million viewers worldwide. More importantly, new EU legislation on the horizon could soon require all new washing machines to include microplastic filters.

For now, collected material goes to sealed landfills, but Matter is working on something better. Through their Love Your Lint program, the company is trialing ways to transform captured fibers back into new materials.

The technology works, Root says. Now they're seeking partners to bring textile recycling to commercial scale across Europe.

Sometimes the biggest environmental solutions come in small packages. This one fits behind your washing machine and could help protect the foundation of life on Earth, one load of laundry at a time.
