EU Solar Hits 25% in June, Beats All Other Power Sources

Solar panels across Europe just pulled off something remarkable: they generated more electricity than nuclear, gas, wind, or any other single source for an entire month.

The European Union's solar farms and rooftop panels produced 25% of the bloc's electricity in June 2026, according to Ember, a London energy research group. That's 52 terawatt hours of clean power, enough to beat nuclear (21%), gas (15%), wind (14%), and coal (8%) combined.

It's only the third month on record that solar claimed the top spot. Just one month earlier in May, solar hit 23% and seemed impressive. June shattered that record.

The timing couldn't have been better. Record-breaking heatwaves drove up demand for cooling just as solar panels were soaking up intense summer sunshine. Instead of straining to meet electricity needs, Europe's solar capacity rose to the challenge.

Some countries showed especially stunning progress. Germany pulled 36% of its electricity from solar in June. Spain reached 34%. But perhaps the most surprising success story came from Poland, where solar hit 24% despite the country's heavy reliance on coal power.

The Ripple Effect

Europe didn't stumble into this milestone by accident. The continent added 65 gigawatts of new solar installations in 2025 alone, part of a sustained buildout that's pushed solar generation up more than 20% every year between 2021 and 2025.

That steady growth is now paying dividends during the times when electricity matters most. As climate change drives hotter summers and higher cooling demand, solar naturally produces more power exactly when grids need it.

Even countries traditionally dependent on fossil fuels are proving they can transform quickly. Poland's achievement shows that no nation is locked into its energy past. With the right investments, coal strongholds can become solar success stories in just a few years.

The momentum shows no signs of slowing. As more panels come online across the continent, solar's record-breaking months could soon become the new normal, turning Europe's clean energy future into its everyday reality.
