Europe Approves World's First Combined Flu-COVID Vaccine

Getting your flu shot and COVID booster just became a lot easier for people across Europe.

The European Commission this week approved Moderna's mCOMBRIAX, making it the world's first authorized combination vaccine for both respiratory viruses. Instead of two separate shots, adults can now get protection from both illnesses in a single dose.

The approval covers all 27 European Union countries, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The vaccine could appear in pharmacies as soon as this upcoming flu season.

Clinical trials showed the combination shot works better than getting separate vaccines. In a study of 4,000 adults, mCOMBRIAX triggered stronger immune responses against common flu strains and COVID-19 than standard flu vaccines. The trial included participants aged 50 to 64 and those 65 and older, with no safety concerns.

Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel says the vaccine aims to simplify immunization, especially for high-risk adults. "By combining protection against two significant respiratory viruses in a single dose, our vaccine aims to strengthen the resilience of healthcare systems across Europe," he said.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough goes beyond convenience. Fewer doctor visits mean less time off work and easier access for people with mobility challenges or transportation barriers. Healthcare systems can deliver the same protection with half the appointments, freeing up resources for other patient needs.

The combination approach could also improve vaccination rates. Studies consistently show that people are more likely to get vaccinated when the process is simpler and requires fewer trips.

Moderna developed the vaccine by combining its COVID-19 shot with an investigational flu vaccine called mRNA-1010. The same mRNA technology that proved successful during the pandemic now tackles two major respiratory threats at once.

The company is working with national health authorities across Europe to make the vaccine widely available. This partnership approach helps ensure the shot reaches communities that need it most, from rural areas to urban centers.
