There's another leak in the system that's easier to fix than you'd think. About one in four liters of drinking water never reaches its destination because of leaky pipes. In Romania and Italy, that number jumps to more than 40%. Repairing this aging infrastructure would account for most potential savings in public water supplies.

Individual actions matter too. Low flow toilets, efficient appliances, and rainwater harvesting can reduce household water use by 10 to 40%. But citizens have another powerful tool: pushing governments to prioritize water smart energy policies.

Europe isn't starting from scratch. The continent has already proven these solutions work by cutting water use 25% in twenty years. Wind and solar are now the cheapest forms of energy, which means the water saving switch also saves money.
