Europe Offers 40,000 Free Rail Passes to Young Travelers
Young Europeans can now apply for free train passes to explore the continent this summer. The DiscoverEU program returns with 40,000 passes for eco-friendly travel adventures across 29 countries.
Imagine exploring European cities, tasting local cuisines, and making friends across borders without paying for transportation. That's exactly what 40,000 young Europeans will experience this summer through a returning travel program.
DiscoverEU, part of the Erasmus+ initiative, just opened applications for its 2026 season. Young people born between July 2007 and June 2008 can apply for free travel passes valid for up to seven days within a 15-month window starting this July.
The program focuses on sustainable travel, offering rail passes that connect young travelers to Europe's architecture, art, music, and cultural heritage. Winners can explore solo or bring up to four friends along for the journey.
"For many, this is also their first opportunity to travel independently and connect with people from all over Europe," said Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport. The timing celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Schengen area, which allows free movement across 29 European states.

The Ripple Effect
This initiative does more than provide free trips. It builds connections between young people from different countries and cultures, creating understanding that lasts long after the journey ends.
Since launching in 2018, DiscoverEU has received 1.9 million applications, showing just how hungry young people are for meaningful experiences. Past participants return home with new perspectives, friendships that cross borders, and confidence from navigating unfamiliar places.
Winners also receive discount cards offering deals on accommodation, food, museums, and local transport across participating countries. The program suggests pre-planned cultural routes through cities like Cork, Ireland and Valletta, Malta, or travelers can design their own adventures.
Applications stay open until April 22 for residents and citizens of EU countries, plus Iceland and Turkey. The program prioritizes fairness and solidarity, ensuring young people from all backgrounds can access these life-changing opportunities.
Thousands of young Europeans are about to discover that the continent's greatest treasures aren't just its monuments, but the connections we make along the way.
