Europeans Back Faster Green Energy Despite Higher Bills

Across Europe, citizens are sending a clear message: they're ready to embrace renewable energy, even if it costs more in the short term.

A new survey of more than 6,000 people across Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland found that 39 percent support accelerating the shift to clean energy despite potential price increases. Only 17 percent said Europe should prioritize the cheapest energy sources regardless of environmental impact.

The timing couldn't be more relevant. The war in Iran has disrupted about a fifth of global oil and liquified natural gas trade, exposing Europe's ongoing dependence on imported fossil fuels. After cutting Russian gas following the Ukraine invasion, Europe simply switched to other suppliers like Norway, Algeria and Qatar, but that didn't eliminate the risk.

Around 60 percent of respondents want Europe to either speed up or maintain its current pace toward renewables. The enthusiasm varies by country, with Italy leading at 49 percent supporting faster action, followed by Germany at 43 percent. Poland lags behind at just 27 percent.

The survey also revealed near-universal support for energy self-reliance. An impressive 93 percent said the EU should develop its own major energy companies to compete globally, while 96 percent called investing in energy infrastructure important.

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen has seized on this moment to argue that clean energy isn't just about climate anymore. It's about security and independence from volatile global markets.

The Ripple Effect

This public backing gives European governments a powerful mandate to dramatically expand wind farms, solar installations and battery storage without fear of voter backlash. Rather than needing to convince citizens, leaders now have proof that their populations understand the long game.

The shift toward homegrown renewable energy could reshape Europe's geopolitical position entirely. Every solar panel installed and wind turbine erected represents one less vulnerability to faraway conflicts and unpredictable petrostates.

Not everyone's on board yet. Nearly a quarter of respondents want to slow the transition to keep bills down, reflecting real concerns about affordability during uncertain economic times.

But the overall picture shows a continent ready to invest in its energy future, even when that means short-term sacrifice. Europeans have watched energy prices spike due to wars and supply disruptions, and they're choosing a different path forward.

A path where their energy comes from their own wind, sun and innovation instead of shipping routes that can close overnight.
