Europe's 2026 Solar Eclipse: Millions to See Celestial Show

Millions of Europeans will witness a rare celestial gift this Wednesday as 2026's only total solar eclipse sweeps across the Northern Hemisphere. For Spain, it's the first total eclipse since 1905.

The moon's shadow will race across Iceland, Greenland, and northern Spain in just under two hours, creating a brief moment of daytime darkness. Western Iceland and northern Spain offer the best viewing spots where totality will last about two minutes.

But you don't need to be in the path of totality to join the cosmic celebration. About 230 million people across Europe will see at least 90% of the sun covered, turning their familiar afternoon skies into something extraordinary.

Major cities including Madrid, London, and Paris will all experience dramatic darkening. In London, 91% of the sun will disappear at 7:13 p.m. local time, while Valencia, Spain, will see complete totality at exactly 8:32 p.m.

Even North America gets a small slice of the action. Fairbanks, Alaska, will see 37% totality at 8:27 a.m. local time, while Boston, New York City, and Toronto will catch smaller partial views.

The whole event moves quickly. The eclipse first touches down in extreme northern Russia at 1 p.m. Eastern time and completes its journey by 2:45 p.m. ET.
