EV Batteries Now Charge to 98% in Just Six Minutes

Electric vehicle batteries just took a giant leap forward, and it's going to change how millions of people think about ditching their gas cars.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited (CATL), which produces more EV batteries than anyone else on Earth, unveiled its third-generation Shenxing battery at an event in Beijing this week. The breakthrough technology charges from 10% to 98% in just six minutes and 27 seconds.

To put that in perspective, you could plug in your nearly dead EV, grab a coffee, and hit the road with a full charge before you finish your drink. It's faster than most gas station stops when you factor in pumping and paying.

This matters because "range anxiety," the fear of running out of power with no charger nearby, has been one of the biggest barriers keeping people from switching to electric vehicles. Long charging times made road trips feel risky and inconvenient compared to quick gas fill-ups.

CATL currently controls over 40% of the global EV battery market, meaning this technology could soon appear in millions of vehicles worldwide. The company's founder and chairman, Robin Zeng Yuqun, emphasized that Chinese EV companies should focus on quality innovation rather than endless price wars as they expand globally.

The new batteries also beat the competition. BYD, the world's largest EV maker and second-biggest battery producer, unveiled its own fast-charging battery that reaches 90% in nine minutes. CATL claims its technology is now the fastest in the world.

This advancement doesn't just make life easier for current EV owners. It removes one of the final psychological barriers preventing millions of drivers from making the switch to electric vehicles.

Faster charging means apartment dwellers who can't charge overnight at home can rely on quick public charging stops.
