Modern electric vehicle charging station with sleek design showing fast charging technology in action

EV Charging Drops to 10 Minutes as Battery Giants Race

🤯 Mind Blown

The wait at electric vehicle charging stations is about to get a lot shorter. Two of the world's biggest battery makers just announced breakthrough technology that charges EVs in under 10 minutes.

Imagine pulling into a charging station and leaving with a nearly full battery in the time it takes to grab a coffee.

That future just arrived. BYD and CATL, the world's two largest EV battery manufacturers, are rolling out fast-charging technology that can power up electric vehicles in 10 minutes or less.

BYD fired the opening shot last month with its Flash Charging Technology. The system can charge an EV from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. A full charge from 10% to 97% takes only nine minutes.

The technology works even in brutal cold. At temperatures as low as -30°C, charging from 20% to 97% takes just 12 minutes. BYD's flash charging stations deliver up to 1,500 kilowatts of power, 50% more than their previous generation.

BYD isn't stopping at home. The company already operates over 5,000 fast-charging stations across 310 Chinese cities and plans to expand to 20,000 by the end of 2026. European drivers will see the technology arrive soon, starting with the launch of BYD's luxury Denza Z9 GT.

Not to be outdone, CATL announced this week a new partnership with SAIC-GM-Wuling Auto. Together, they're developing technology that charges batteries from 10% to 80% in 10 minutes or less. The companies plan to bring their solution to international markets as they work toward what they call "complementary energy freedom."

The timing matters. CATL leads global EV battery sales with nearly 40% market share, while BYD holds second place at 16%. Their competition is driving innovation that benefits everyone.

The Ripple Effect

This charging revolution solves one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption. Range anxiety and charging time have kept many drivers from making the switch to electric. When charging takes less time than a typical gas station stop, that barrier disappears.

The technology also makes EVs more practical for people without home charging options. Apartment dwellers and city residents who rely on public charging stations will find electric vehicles just as convenient as traditional cars.

Beyond individual drivers, faster charging means delivery fleets, rideshare vehicles, and public transportation can spend more time on the road. That translates to cleaner air in cities and reduced carbon emissions globally.

The race between these battery giants is pushing the entire industry forward faster than anyone predicted just a few years ago. What seemed impossible is now rolling out across thousands of charging stations.

Your next electric vehicle might charge faster than your phone.
