Evenepoel Wins Stage 16, Closes Gap on Tour de France Leader

Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel is proving he's not just racing for stage wins at this year's Tour de France—he's hunting down the overall title.

The 26-year-old Belgian stormed through Tuesday's 26.1-kilometer time trial along Lake Geneva, finishing 28 seconds faster than four-time Tour winner Tadej Pogacar. That performance trimmed Pogacar's overall lead to just 4 minutes and 32 seconds with several stages still to come.

The timing made the victory even sweeter for Evenepoel. Racing on Belgium's national holiday with his entire family watching from the roadside, he became the first Belgian in years to win on their nation's special day.

"My whole family from both sides being here, my parents came just today," Evenepoel said after crossing the finish line. "My wife is here with her parents and the siblings as well."

From the moment Evenepoel started his race against the clock, spectators could tell something special was happening. He blazed through the uphill section of the course, gaining most of his advantage where power and endurance matter most.

Danish rider Mattias Skjelmose finished third, more than a minute behind, while everyone else trailed even further back. Evenepoel also extended his cushion over third-place rider Isaac del Toro to more than two minutes.
