Belgian Tennis Player Makes History at U.S. Open at 21

A 21-year-old tennis player just made history for his country while battling through injury pain that nearly ended his dream run.

Alexander Blockx defeated Francisco Cerundolo in four sets Monday to become the first Belgian man ever to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals. The 28th seed won 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in his Flushing Meadows debut, cementing his place in Belgian tennis history.

The match nearly didn't happen. Blockx developed sharp rib pain during play and needed what he called "magical medication" from the doctor just to continue.

"I was just holding on to be honest," Blockx admitted after the win. Despite taking the first set 6-3, he knew either player could have won.

The most dramatic moment came in the third set when Blockx fell behind 0-40 on his own serve at 5-5. He fought back with powerful serves and aggressive strokes, holding serve and then breaking Cerundolo in the next game to take the set.

The fourth set stayed close until Blockx broke serve in the final game. When Cerundolo's last shot sailed out, the Belgian collapsed to the ground in pure joy.

Why This Inspires

Blockx's journey this year shows what's possible when talent meets determination. He started 2026 ranked outside the top 100, requiring him to qualify just to play the Australian Open.

Now he's making history for his country on one of tennis's biggest stages. He already upset fifth-seeded Flavio Cobolli in the third round, proving his quarterfinal run is no fluke.

"This morning I stepped onto this court for the first time to warm up and that felt unreal," Blockx said. "To play a match here and win a match here is even crazier."

His next challenge comes against either unseeded Russian Karen Khachanov or 14th-seeded American Learner Tien. Whatever happens next, Blockx has already achieved something no Belgian man has done in the tournament's 145-year history.
