EVs Cut Oil Use by 2.3M Barrels Daily in 2025

Electric vehicles just hit a milestone that nobody saw coming: they're now saving the world 2.3 million barrels of oil every single day.

That's not a future prediction. That happened in 2025, according to research from BloombergNEF. To put that in perspective, it's roughly equivalent to 70% of all the oil Iran exports through the Strait of Hormuz.

Here's the twist that might surprise you: electric cars aren't leading this oil revolution yet. Electric scooters, motorcycles, and three-wheelers, especially across Asia, are currently the biggest fuel savers. These smaller vehicles displaced about 1.1 million barrels daily last year, compared to 741,000 barrels from passenger cars.

But that's about to flip. As electric car sales continue their rapid climb worldwide, researchers project that passenger vehicles will drive most of the oil savings by 2030. BloombergNEF expects plug-in vehicles to eliminate up to 5.3 million barrels of daily oil use within five years.

The growth is happening fast. Automakers sold 20.7 million plug-in vehicles worldwide last year, a 20% jump from the year before. While EV sales have slowed in the U.S., they're booming in China, Europe, and India.

The Ripple Effect

This shift isn't just about numbers on a spreadsheet. Studies show that high EV adoption in California and New York has already cleaned up the air people breathe. Even after accounting for manufacturing and electricity production, electric vehicles have a lower carbon footprint over their lifetime than gas cars.

The benefits hit your wallet too. Residential electricity costs significantly less than gasoline per mile driven across the country. In New York, a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 costs hundreds of dollars less annually to run and maintain than a comparable Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.

With ongoing conflicts keeping gas prices elevated, switching to electric power is hitting home for drivers in a whole new way. The math is simple: less oil dependence means more money in your pocket and cleaner air for your community.

By 2030, millions more barrels of oil will stay in the ground every day, thanks to people choosing electric wheels over gas engines.
