EVs Outsell Gas Cars for First Time in Europe and Australia

For the first time ever, electric vehicles sold more units than traditional gas-powered cars in Europe this past December, with Australia hitting the same milestone in the same month.

New data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association shows that fully electric vehicles edged ahead of petrol-only cars in monthly registrations across the continent. Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France led the charge with strong year-over-year increases in EV sales.

Australia mirrored this shift almost exactly. Local industry data reveals that combined electrified vehicles (including battery electric, plug-in hybrids, and conventional hybrids) narrowly outsold petrol cars in December 2025, with around 35,000 electrified units compared to about 34,500 gas vehicles.

The December numbers represent a single month rather than a full-year trend. Over the entire 2025 calendar year, Australian electrified vehicles captured 28.6 percent of the market, while petrol cars still held the larger overall share.

But the momentum is undeniable. Fully electric cars in Australia topped 100,000 units sold for the first time in a single year, a record that signals growing consumer confidence in the technology.
