FAA Tests AI System to Predict Flight Delays Weeks Ahead

The Federal Aviation Administration is testing a new system called SMART (Strategic Management of Airspace Routing Trajectories) that uses AI to predict flight congestion before it causes delays. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy says the software can suggest tiny schedule tweaks, like moving a departure time by five or 10 minutes, that prevent bottlenecks across thousands of flights.

The timing couldn't be better. One storm can now cascade into delays across the entire country. Schedules feel tighter than ever, and frustrated travelers are stuck watching departure boards flip from "on time" to "delayed" with no explanation.

SMART analyzes flight patterns far in advance, spotting trouble before tickets are even sold. It might notice that a specific route regularly clogs up at certain times of year, then adjust schedules to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Three companies are competing to shape the system: Palantir Technologies, Thales SA, and Air Space Intelligence.

The Bright Side

The system won't replace human air traffic controllers. Instead, it gives them superpowers, helping them see patterns that might otherwise stay hidden until problems start piling up. Early predictions could mean fewer last-minute gate delays and smoother travel days for millions of passengers.

The $12 billion price tag is steep, and the FAA's track record on tech upgrades has been mixed. Its last major overhaul, NextGen, cost $36 billion over two decades but delivered only 16 percent of expected benefits. Still, supporters believe modern AI can succeed where older systems struggled.

If SMART works as promised, you might not even notice the changes. Your flight times might shift slightly when you book. Departure schedules might look more spread out. But you'll likely notice fewer frustrating delays and more predictable travel.
