Family of 7 Adopts 82-Year-Old Neighbor as Grandpa

Moving into a new neighborhood is nerve-wracking, especially when you're the only Black family on the block with five kids in tow. But for the Caraballos, those fears melted away the moment their 82-year-old neighbor knocked on the door.

Paul Callahan didn't just welcome the family to Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 2022. He showed up with tools, a ladder, and an eagerness to help fix up their new home.

"He was coming over with tools. He'd bring screwdrivers and teach Wilson how to fix up the garage," says Sharaine Caraballo, who moved in with her husband Wilson and their five children. What started as neighborly advice quickly became something deeper.

Callahan, a widower who had lost his wife before the Caraballos arrived, found himself drawn to the lively household. The kids gravitated to him just as quickly, eager to hear stories from his eight decades of life.

Now Callahan stops by nearly every day. He's at every cookout, every holiday gathering, every family celebration. "The kids run up to him like that's their grandfather," Sharaine says. "Paul is definitely a family member. He's no longer considered a neighbor."

For Callahan, the secret to connection is simple. "You get many chances to talk to people. If you don't take a chance, you may miss a friend," he says. "It doesn't hurt to be nice. That's the other thing, it costs you nothing, but a lot of times, you get a better return."
