Family Saves Drowning Bear Cub from B.C. Lake

When Christina Zamniuk and her family went boating on Okanagan Lake on September 12, they never expected to become wildlife rescuers. But when they spotted a tiny bear cub fighting to keep its nose above water, they knew they had to act fast.

"All of a sudden, his little nose kept going under the water and he was blowing little bubbles," Christina recalled. The exhausted cub could barely paddle anymore.

The family quickly pulled the shivering animal onto their boat. They nicknamed him "Boo Boo" and fed him cheese while he warmed up in the sun, getting his strength back after his ordeal in the cold lake water.

After calling the B.C. Conservation Officer Service and B.C. SPCA for guidance, the Zamniuks brought the cub back to shore in the direction he'd been swimming. Once on land, Boo Boo initially didn't want to leave his rescuers, but eventually swam to shore and ran off into the woods.

Wildlife officials confirmed they haven't received any more reports of an orphan cub in the area, suggesting Boo Boo likely reunited with his mother. Black bears are typically strong swimmers, making this case an unusual exception where human help made all the difference.
