Fifth Grader Reaches State Finals in Louisiana Student Awards

When Akshay Parasuraman's superintendent and principal surprised him in front of his entire class, the fifth grader learned he'd become a state finalist in one of Louisiana's most prestigious student recognition programs.

The St. Rose Elementary student earned his spot by sweeping through four competitive levels. He won his school award in October, claimed the parish title in November, then advanced through zone and regional competitions to reach the state finals.

What makes Akshay stand out isn't just his perfect attendance on the Principal's List or his participation in the Talented Art program and Math Academy. Assistant Principal Maggie Boos says it's his extraordinary sense of responsibility and ownership over his learning that sets him apart from other fifth graders.

Beyond academics, Akshay serves in the Parish Choir and leads his class at the International Tamil Academy Language program. His resume includes significant community service work and diverse learning experiences outside school, giving him the depth to shine during the program's rigorous interview and writing processes.

His motivation comes from a clear purpose. Akshay wants to become an animal scientist because he's heartbroken by how human activity and pollution threaten wildlife survival.

"I want to help these creatures because they struggle to thrive in the wild," Akshay said. His compassion for animals drives his commitment to excellence today.

Science class is where Akshay truly comes alive. He loves making hypotheses, testing them, and learning from mistakes when experiments don't go as planned. That process of trial, error, and growth reflects how he approaches every challenge.

Why This Inspires

Akshay's advice to other students reveals wisdom beyond his years. He tells peers to rely on determination when facing problems and stay open minded when making decisions. His message is simple: never give up, keep learning, and grow from every mistake.

Throughout the entire competition, Akshay maintained remarkable poise and humility. His manners and conversational skills impressed judges at every level, reflecting the values his parents instilled in him.

After completing an interview and writing sample in the coming months, Akshay will be honored at the 2026 Students of the Year Award Ceremony in Baton Rouge this summer. There, officials will announce the state winners in three categories: fifth grade, eighth grade, and high school senior.

For now, this young scientist keeps his focus forward. "I will continue to try my best and work even harder to try to get student of the year for the state," he said.
