Filmmaker Aditi Anand Builds Family Through Love in India

When filmmaker Aditi Anand met Susan Dias in 2012, she could finally imagine a future she'd never let herself dream of before. Growing up queer in India meant accepting that marriage and children weren't part of the picture.

"When we come out to our parents, we're not just telling them that we're gay," Aditi explains. "We're telling them we'll never be married, never have children."

But meeting Susan changed everything. For the first time, Aditi felt ready to share this love with her family and build a life she'd been told wasn't possible.

The 42-year-old producer, who founded Little Red Car Films and Neelam Studios and worked on acclaimed movies like No One Killed Jessica and Paan Singh Tomar, grew up surrounded by love. Her childhood home included both sets of grandparents and their siblings, what she fondly calls a "herd of elephants."

Those grandparents had lived through India's independence and Partition, carrying stories of hope and loss. They taught her that building something meaningful requires participation, not just observation.

Today, Aditi and Susan, 37, have created their own version of family. Together for over a decade, they co-founded the venture Native Brews and petitioned India's Supreme Court for marriage equality and legal recognition of same-sex parents.

At the center of their lives is their son, whom they are raising with honesty and openness. The family moves beyond conventional definitions, making space for grandparents and friends, for tradition and reinvention.
