Filmmaker Wins Global Race With Character-Driven Stories

A Sydney filmmaker just proved that the best stories come from listening first and filming second.

Elliot Constable won ABC iview's Race Around the World, a documentary competition that sent six filmmakers racing across continents with just 10 days to shoot and edit each film. His secret? Spending two full days just listening to the people he profiled.

In Moldova, Constable met Tatiana, a Ukrainian woman trying to return to her war-torn homeland for cancer treatment. Rather than rushing to capture footage, he took time to understand her story. That patience created a powerful connection that resonated with judges and viewers alike.

The competition pushed Constable to work completely solo across South Africa, Norway, Azerbaijan, the Bahamas, and Brazil. He found his stories, shot them, edited them, and recorded all the sound himself, all while adapting to last-minute destination changes and tight deadlines.

His winning approach focused on hope rather than despair. In Rio de Janeiro's favelas, he profiled a father working to give his son alternatives to gang life. "I didn't want to do a story about the gangs, but I wanted the film to be more about hope," Constable explained.

Why This Inspires

Constable's victory shows that authentic human connection beats flashy production every time. He's stayed in touch with the families he profiled, and his mother even sent a care package to Tatiana's family in Kyiv.

Fellow contestant Jayden O'Neill won the People's Choice Award with a similar philosophy. His favorite film documented Filipino fishers using illegal methods to feed their families, and audiences loved it because the genuine connection showed through.

The competition gave all six filmmakers a chance to tell stories that matter. Host Zan Rowe confirmed the contestants worked entirely alone, finding stories and creating films with zero crew support.

Constable's prize includes ABC funding to produce his next project. He's considering returning to Moldova or Brazil to tell bigger stories, or exploring untold narratives closer to home in Australia.

The filmmaker admits his success hasn't fully sunk in yet, but he's clear about his mission: making people care about the complex lives of the characters in his films.
