Final Turbine Rises on $5B Wind Farm Despite Federal Pressure

Construction crews just placed the final piece of a $5 billion puzzle that the federal government tried twice to stop.

Revolution Wind, a massive offshore wind farm 15 miles south of Little Compton, Rhode Island, completed installation of its 65th turbine on September 17. The 704-megawatt project, built by Danish energy giant Ørsted in partnership with Skyborn Renewables, will supply clean electricity to Rhode Island and Connecticut once fully operational this year.

The journey to this milestone wasn't smooth. Last August, the Trump administration ordered all work stopped, citing national security concerns without providing specifics. Federal Judge Royce C. Lamberth quickly overturned that order, calling it "the height of arbitrary and capricious."

When the government issued a second stop-work order in January, Lamberth ruled against it again, this time describing the directive as "unreasonable and seemingly unjustified." Construction continued despite the political headwinds.

The wind farm has already started delivering power to New England's electric grid since March. Ørsted confirmed they're now scaling up generation as commissioning activities continue across all 65 turbines, with safety remaining the top priority.

Rhode Island will receive 400 megawatts of the farm's total capacity, with Connecticut getting the rest. That's enough clean energy to power the equivalent of more than 350,000 homes across the region.

The Ripple Effect

Revolution Wind represents more than just clean energy. It's the second offshore wind farm supplying power to Rhode Island, following the pioneering Block Island Wind Farm that became America's first offshore wind project a decade ago with just five turbines.

While some developers buckled under federal pressure and abandoned their offshore wind proposals in exchange for lease payment refunds, Revolution Wind pushed forward. Ørsted is even working on another project called Sunrise Wind near the Revolution site, signaling continued confidence in offshore wind's future.

The completion arrives as the renewable energy industry faces significant political challenges nationwide. Revolution Wind stands as proof that large-scale clean energy projects can survive adversity and deliver on their promises to power communities with affordable, reliable electricity.
