Finland's Environment Minister just identified a surprising partner in the global fight for sustainability: Gujarat, India.

Sari Multala visited Gandhinagar this week for the World Circular Economy Forum 2026 with a clear mission. She wants Finnish clean-tech companies to use Gujarat's massive industrial base and population as a proving ground for green solutions.

The circular economy isn't just recycling. It's about using every resource more efficiently, cutting emissions, and growing economies without draining the planet dry.

Multala praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's LiFE initiative, which brings resource efficiency into everyday life. "Gujarat, with its large population and diverse industrial base, offers an opportunity to understand how solutions that begin small can be expanded to make a wider impact," she explained.

Finland brings serious credentials to the table. The Nordic nation developed one of the world's first national circular economy roadmaps and has spent years refining policies that actually work.

Around 10 Finnish companies attended the forum, showcasing technologies ready for adaptation and scaling. The timing couldn't be better, with the EU and India recently agreeing on a new trade deal that opens doors for sustainability partnerships.

Multala emphasized that successful green transitions need more than just technology. They require smart financing, changes in consumer behavior, and government policies that give businesses confidence to invest long-term.

Many Finnish clean-tech startups emerge from universities through international research and student exchanges. These same collaborative approaches could help adapt Finnish innovations for Indian conditions and markets.
