Lukas Sjöman didn't wait for the boating industry to go green. He grabbed some plywood, solar panels, and a bold idea, then built his own fossil-fuel-free yacht and sailed it across Europe.
The Finnish shipbuilder designed and constructed the Helios 11, an 11-meter solar yacht that traveled more than 3,000 nautical miles without a drop of gasoline or diesel. His initial budget was just $20,000, proving that sustainable ocean navigation doesn't require a millionaire's wallet.
The yacht runs on ten standard residential solar panels mounted on the roof, feeding power to a 24 kWh battery system. A 6 kW electric outboard motor replaces traditional gas-guzzling engines, generating up to 4,000 watts in full sunlight.

Batteries run around $2,881, the electric motor costs between $4,033 and $4,609, and solar panels add another $864. Construction materials including plywood, fiberglass, epoxy resin, and paint total about $20,742.
A DIY version could be completed for between $23,047 and $34,571. Even a professionally built version would only cost between $69,141 and $92,188, far less than conventional yachts of similar size.

Sjöman's success is already inspiring others to rethink what's possible on the water. His project proves that ordinary people with determination and creativity can build long-range electric vessels without corporate backing or massive investments.
