
Finnish Startup Turns Wood Waste Into Carbon-Storing Tiles
A Finnish company is transforming lignin—the part of wood that usually gets burned—into sleek wall tiles that lock away carbon for thousands of years. The material stores twice as much carbon as wood and never decays.
Paper mills have been throwing away lignin for generations, burning it for energy because it resists most conventional uses. Finnish startup Elementic saw something different: the foundation for a building material that could trap carbon dioxide for millennia.
The result is MO6, a wall tile that is 90% carbon and stores about 2.4 kilograms of atmospheric CO2 for every kilogram of material. That's double the carbon storage of wood, with one crucial difference: it doesn't rot.
The manufacturing process reads like a recipe. Elementic processes lignin in a bioreactor to strip out impurities, creates what general manager Johanna Normiala calls "a kind of dough," then bakes it into a hard, lightweight material. The details remain patented and secretive.
The finished product is fire-resistant, durable, and sports an off-black color with dramatic texture. Its thermal and acoustic properties match wood, with improvements expected as production evolves.
What makes MO6 truly different is the "carbon negative" claim. Most building materials emit more carbon than they store across their lifetime. Even timber, which sequesters carbon as trees grow, eventually releases it through decay or burning.

MO6 tiles don't decay and are designed to be recyclable. Elementic argues the carbon stays locked inside far longer than any living or recently living material could manage.
The company launched its debut collection, MO6 Eternal, at Helsinki Design Week in September. The choice of venue was strategic: Elementic is positioning MO6 as a premium design brand first, environmental product second.
That distinction matters. Architects and hotel developers shopping for aesthetics might not seek out sustainable materials, but they'll consider a striking wall tile that happens to fight climate change. A Paris spa under construction is among the first confirmed projects.
The Ripple Effect
MO6 currently works for dry indoor spaces, available in various finishes and coatings. But the company's next move could multiply its impact: bricks that shift from decorative finish to structural material.
"There's a huge potential for that, not only interior part, which is now our first business, but in future in a much larger scale in building," Normiala said. Structural applications would mean carbon-storing material forming the bones of buildings, not just their surfaces.
The approach transforms waste into climate solution while giving designers a material they actually want to use. Sometimes the best environmental wins happen when sustainability becomes beautiful.
