Firefighter Hugs Deer to Safety on Frozen Washington Lake
When a terrified deer became stranded on a frozen lake in Washington, a firefighter lay down on the ice to give the animal a gentle hug and pull it to safety. The heartwarming rescue shows how far first responders will go to protect even the most vulnerable creatures.
A deer trapped on a frozen lake in Washington got the rescue of a lifetime when a firefighter literally hugged it to safety.
On January 27, local resident Daniel Poleschook spotted the deer struggling on the icy surface of Loon Lake in Stevens County. The frightened animal couldn't stand on the slippery ice, so Poleschook called the Stevens County Fire Department for help.
When Fire District No. 1 arrived, firefighter Gavyn Gallagher grabbed a rope and gurney and carefully made his way onto the frozen lake. The scared deer tried to escape but kept slipping on the ice.
That's when Gallagher made a creative decision. He placed a rope around the deer's body, then lay down on the ice himself and wrapped his arms around the terrified animal. His team began pulling both firefighter and deer slowly across the ice toward shore.

Video of the rescue shows the deer crying out at first, clearly unsure what was happening. But as Gallagher held the animal close and they slid together toward solid ground, the deer visibly calmed down.
Sunny's Take
Something magical happens when compassion meets creativity. Gallagher could have used tools or kept his distance, but instead he chose connection. By literally meeting the deer at its level and offering comfort through touch, he transformed a terrifying situation into something almost tender.
The rescue wasn't just about one firefighter's bravery. Fish and Wildlife officers and local residents all worked together to help. The Stevens County Fire Department praised the team's careful decision making in their Facebook post that evening.
"The Fire District will always weigh the hazards of animal rescues, and crews today went through a great decision making process for a very successful outcome," the department wrote. Poleschook confirmed the deer was safely released and walked away unharmed.
The moment felt like a real life version of Bambi's ice scene, but with a much happier ending.
