Firefighter Hugs Stranded Deer to Safety on Frozen Lake

When a deer became stranded on the frozen surface of Loon Lake in Stevens County, Washington, firefighter Gavyn Gallagher did something you don't see in training manuals: he became a human blanket.

Local resident Daniel Poleschook spotted the distressed animal on January 27, struggling helplessly on the slick ice. The deer couldn't stand or gain any footing, so Poleschook immediately called the Stevens County Fire Department.

Firefighters from Fire District No. 1 arrived with a stretcher and rope, ready for a standard ice rescue. But the terrified deer had other plans. Every time Gallagher approached, the animal tried to scramble away, making the situation more dangerous for both of them.

That's when Gallagher made a split-second decision that would capture hearts worldwide. He abandoned the stretcher, lay flat on the frozen lake, and wrapped his entire body around the frightened deer.

Video footage shows the deer crying out in confusion as Gallagher holds on tight. His fellow firefighters then pulled both rescuer and animal across the ice toward shore, using the rope for a slow, steady slide to safety.

Something remarkable happened during that unusual journey. As the pair glided toward solid ground in each other's arms, the deer visibly relaxed, seeming to understand that this human meant no harm.
