Volunteer firefighter holding small bobcat kitten wrapped in jacket after brush fire rescue

Firefighter Pulls Bobcat Kitten From Brush Fire Ashes

🦸 Hero Alert

A volunteer firefighter saved a tiny bobcat kitten crawling from the ashes of a Florida brush fire, giving the four-week-old wildcat a second chance at life. The rescued kitten, now named Ash, is recovering at a wildlife rehabilitation center with no major injuries.

When Julian Roman-Kulwicki spotted something moving in the ashes of a Charlotte County brush fire, he never expected to find a meowing bobcat kitten crawling toward him.

The volunteer firefighter was battling a lightning-sparked blaze on Orange Blossom Boulevard on May 24 when he discovered the tiny animal. "I went over, grabbed it and wrapped it in my jacket," Roman-Kulwicki said.

The four-acre fire had reduced everything to ash, but somehow this four to six week old bobcat survived. Roman-Kulwicki, who has only been volunteering at Bayshore Fire Department for a month, followed his training to protect life.

"She was cold to the touch, so I tried to warm her up," he said. After some quick research, he confirmed his rescue was a baby bobcat.

Back at the station, Fire Captain William LeMieux cleaned the exhausted kitten, still wrapped in firefighting gear. The team quickly contacted the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, known as CROW, on Sanibel Island.

Sunny's Take

Veterinarians at CROW examined the kitten Roman-Kulwicki named Ash and found no burns or injuries. The biggest concern now is potential smoke inhalation, which can cause delayed respiratory problems.

"Right now, she is stable and resting comfortably in our care, which is encouraging," said Dr. Jessica Comolli, CROW's Research and Medical Director. "We are monitoring her very closely."

Dr. Comolli thanked the Bayshore Fire team for their quick action in bringing Ash to professional care. The rescue shows how first responders protect all lives, not just human ones.

LeMieux said he feels relieved knowing Ash is getting expert care. "I know she is in good hands there and hopefully will get back to the wild," he added.

Little Ash's survival story reminds us that heroes come in all forms, and second chances can emerge from the ashes.
