Firefighters Save Golden Retriever From Icy Massachusetts River

When a golden retriever puppy spotted a squirrel Saturday morning, instinct took over. The young dog bolted onto the frozen Connecticut River in Hadley, Massachusetts, but the ice gave way beneath him.

His owner did exactly the right thing. She called 911 instead of running onto the unstable ice herself.

Around 9 a.m., Hadley Fire Chief Michael Spanknebel and an on-duty firefighter grabbed their ice rescue equipment and rushed to the river. They could hear the puppy whimpering, his back half submerged in frigid water while his front paws scrambled against the ice.

Spanknebel called for backup from neighboring Northampton. A firefighter suited up in an ice rescue dry suit, attached a safety rope, and carefully crawled across the frozen surface toward the struggling dog.

The chief held the other end of the rope from shore, ready to pull his colleague to safety if needed. The rescuer reached the puppy, grabbed his harness, and pulled him from the icy water.

Michael Mazulis, president of the local firefighters union, praised the owner's decision to call for help. He pointed to a heartbreaking incident just days earlier in Eastham, where a couple died after falling through ice while walking their dog on Valentine's Day.

Firefighters have specialized equipment that makes ice rescues safer. Regular citizens venturing onto unstable ice risk becoming victims themselves, creating an even more dangerous situation for everyone involved.

As temperatures rise this winter, ice conditions become increasingly unpredictable and dangerous. The risk of breaking through and getting swept under the ice by river currents is real.

One puppy is safe at home today because his owner trusted trained professionals to handle a dangerous rescue.
