First Villager Rescued From Flooded Cave in Laos

A crowd erupted in cheers as the first trapped villager emerged from a flooded cave in central Laos on Friday night, marking the breakthrough moment in a complex international rescue mission.

The man, exhausted but alive, struggled to walk and needed two rescue workers to support him as he took his first steps in daylight after days underground. He was immediately taken for medical evaluation.

Five villagers entered the cave in Xaisomboun province last week searching for valuable minerals when a flash flood suddenly blocked their exit. A sixth villager who escaped in time alerted authorities that seven others remained trapped inside.

Rescue teams from Laos, Thailand, Japan, and Malaysia assembled at the remote site about 75 miles north of the capital, Vientiane. Divers found the five men on Wednesday, reportedly in good health but exhausted from dehydration and lack of food.

The rescue operation tested even experienced cave divers. They navigated twisting, narrow passages with jagged walls in complete darkness, racing against time and unpredictable weather.

This international collaboration shows how quickly countries come together when lives hang in the balance. Experts who've never worked together before coordinated seamlessly, sharing skills and equipment to save people they'd never met.

The rescue teams pumped water from the flooded passages, but morning rainstorms complicated their efforts. They've supplied the remaining four men with water, soft food, and foil blankets while they wait for conditions to improve.

Rescuers face a delicate choice: guide people without diving experience through zero-visibility water now, or wait for water levels to drop while hoping weather cooperates. The next evacuations resume tomorrow when both conditions and the men are ready.

Two villagers remain missing as search teams have covered 95% of the tunnel system. Finnish cave diver Mikko Paasi acknowledged they don't have many places left to search.
