FIU's Graduation Rate Soars 45 Points in One Decade

A decade ago, only one in four students at Florida International University graduated in four years. Today, seven out of ten students cross that finish line on time.

That remarkable 45-point jump earned FIU a 2026 Government Productivity Award from Florida TaxWatch. The recognition celebrates how the Miami university turned around student success while using public resources wisely.

FIU didn't just improve. The university now leads every public university in Florida for the fourth year running. In June, the Florida Board of Governors ranked FIU No. 1 among the state's 12 public schools based on graduation rates, job placement, and graduate salaries.

The secret? FIU built a centralized student success system that catches students before they fall through the cracks. When a student struggles academically or thinks about leaving school, dedicated teams step in with personalized support.

"Behind every data point is a student," said Kaitlyn Pereyra, senior director of Student Success Operations and Strategy. The university watches for warning signs and reaches out directly when students need help navigating challenges.

Today, most FIU graduates land full-time jobs or enter graduate school within a year of earning their degrees. Healthcare, education, hospitality, tech, and finance claim the most alumni.

The Ripple Effect

Every percentage point matters because it represents real lives and real careers. Each year, hundreds more students now earn degrees who might have dropped out under the old system.

The coordinated approach saves Florida taxpayers $2.3 million annually by eliminating duplicate programs and sharing resources across departments. That efficiency means more students helped per dollar spent.

"FIU has built a culture where student success drives how we operate, how we innovate and how we measure our impact," said Bridgette Cram, vice president for Academic Affairs. The university proves that when schools align around helping students finish, transformation happens.

Each graduate carries that investment forward into Florida's workforce, strengthening the state's economy one career at a time.
