Five Courts Clear Wind Farms Despite Trump Opposition

Despite political headwinds, America's clean energy revolution just got five major victories in court.

Federal judges have now overruled the Trump administration's attempts to pause construction on all five offshore wind farms planned in U.S. waters. The most recent ruling on Monday cleared the way for Sunrise Wind, a massive project off New York's coast that's already halfway built.

The administration had paused leases for the multibillion-dollar projects in December, citing national security concerns about radar interference. But judges disagreed, one by one, allowing construction to resume on projects that will power hundreds of thousands of homes.

The legal wins come at a time when wind energy is quietly booming across America. Between January and November of last year, new wind power installations jumped 71% compared to 2024, adding more than 5,500 megawatts of clean electricity to the grid.

Wind and solar combined now represent nearly 90% of all new power generation built in the U.S. in 2025. Wind alone accounted for 16% of new electricity generation last year, beating natural gas and trailing only solar energy.

The Ripple Effect

The momentum isn't just about the turbines themselves. Investors remain confident in clean energy's future, driven by rising electricity demand from data centers and improving economics that make renewable power increasingly competitive.

Sunrise Wind, the New York project cleared this week, will eventually power 600,000 homes when completed. Developers say the farm should start delivering electricity later this year, just months after being told to stop building.

The offshore wind industry employs thousands of Americans in manufacturing, construction, and maintenance jobs. These five projects represent billions in investment and years of planning, now finally moving forward despite the political opposition.

Hillary Bright, executive director of advocacy group Turn Forward, captured the mood perfectly: "After five rulings and five clear outcomes, it is time to move past litigation-driven uncertainty and allow these projects to finish the job they were approved to do."

America's clean energy future is being built one turbine at a time, and the courts just ensured that work continues.
