Five Newborn Kittens Saved From Freezing Kelowna Night

Five newborn kittens are fighting their way back to health today after rescuers pulled them from the brink of death in a Kelowna work yard Wednesday morning.

Workers discovered the day-old kittens cold, weak, and nearly motionless early Wednesday. Their feral mother had been frightened away by passing dogs the previous afternoon and never returned, leaving her babies exposed to the overnight cold for hours.

The Okanagan Humane Society received the emergency call and dispatched rescue team member Jamie to the scene. By the time she arrived, the kittens were in critical condition.

Jamie didn't wait for the drive back to headquarters. She tucked the tiny kittens inside her warm T-shirt, using her own body heat to stabilize them during transport while volunteer caregiver Joanne prepared an incubator.

Over several hours, the rescue team carefully introduced glucose drops and kitten milk replacer as the kittens slowly regained strength. The litter has since been transferred to an experienced neonatal foster home that specializes in incubator care.
