Rescue team members working together at cave entrance in Xaisomboun province, Laos

Five Rescued From Flooded Laos Cave, Search Continues

🦸 Hero Alert

International rescue teams saved five of seven people trapped for nearly two weeks in a flooded cave in Laos. Expert divers from eight countries are now working together to reach two others still inside.

When flash floods trapped seven villagers in a remote Laos cave, rescue teams from around the world answered the call and five people are now safe.

The dramatic rescue unfolded in Xaisomboun province, about 120 kilometers north of Vientiane, where the group had been stuck underground for nearly two weeks. Heavy rainfall flooded the main entrance, turning what should have been a way out into an impassable barrier.

The first rescue happened on Friday when an expert diver guided one man through a narrow, flooded passage to safety. By Saturday, the water had receded enough for four more people to walk out on their own. Their families and rescue teams celebrated as each person emerged into daylight.

Teams from Laos, Thailand, Finland, France, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Australia joined forces for the operation. Many of the divers had worked on the famous 2018 Thailand cave rescue that saved 12 schoolboys and their coach, bringing years of specialized experience to this mission.

The two people still inside are believed to be in a deeper section of the cave. Rescuers are pumping water from the flooded passages while a second team searches for alternative entrances on the other side of the mountain. They're also looking for air shafts from above that might provide another way in.

Malaysian diver Lee Kian Lie told reporters the teams will enter the suspected area once water levels drop enough to make it safe. The passage to where the missing villagers may be trapped is very narrow and still heavily flooded, making the work slow and careful.

The Bright Side

This rescue showcases what happens when countries put collaboration first. Eight nations sent their best cave diving experts, many volunteering their time and skills. The successful rescue of five people proves the team's methods work, even in incredibly challenging conditions.

The operation continues despite setbacks from ongoing rain. On Sunday night, heavy rainfall forced teams to suspend work temporarily, but they resumed as soon as conditions allowed.

When one villager escaped early on and alerted authorities, it set this entire international response in motion, proving that asking for help can bring the world to your door.
