Rare Sea Turtle Gets 5,000-Mile Ride From Wales to Texas

When a dog discovered a tiny, half-frozen turtle on a Welsh beach in December 2023, nobody imagined the incredible journey home that lay ahead.

Rhossi, a Kemp's ridley sea turtle, had somehow drifted 5,000 miles from his Gulf of Mexico home to the frigid shores of Wales. At just two pounds and severely cold-stunned, his chances of survival looked grim.

The Anglesey Sea Zoo had other plans. For two years, their team nursed Rhossi back to health, watching him grow stronger and heavier with each passing month. By the time he was ready to travel, he'd tripled his weight to a healthy 46 pounds.

Getting him home required an international effort that reads like an adventure novel. Welsh helicopter pilot Darren Briggs flew Rhossi from Wales to London. From there, he caught a transatlantic flight to Houston, coordinated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, NOAA, and the Texas State Aquarium.

On August 10, 2025, Rhossi finally touched down in Texas. The Houston Zoo's veterinary team immediately got to work assessing his health. Dr. Joe Flanagan even came out of retirement specifically to treat this special patient.

The exam revealed Rhossi is mostly healthy and vigorous, though he's still fighting some lingering pneumonia in his lungs. X-rays and CT scans showed his organs, shell, and flippers are in good shape. Now the team is focused on clearing up that last infection before his big release.

Kemp's ridley sea turtles are among the most endangered species on Earth. They're native to the Gulf of Mexico, but strong ocean currents sometimes sweep them thousands of miles off course. Every single turtle matters to the survival of the species.

The Ripple Effect

Rhossi's rescue shows what's possible when people care enough to work together across continents. A dog walker in Wales, zoo staff who spent two years on daily care, pilots willing to fly a turtle across oceans, and veterinarians coming out of retirement all played crucial roles in saving one small life.

The Houston Zoo's sea turtle rescue program, funded partly by admission tickets, gives hope to other displaced turtles who might wash up far from home. Each successful rehabilitation increases the odds that this critically endangered species will survive for future generations.

Soon, Rhossi will swim free in the warm Gulf waters where he belongs, carrying with him the efforts of dozens of people who refused to give up on a lost turtle.
