Flying terrifies millions of Americans, but one flight attendant's response to a frightened passenger is restoring faith in human kindness at 30,000 feet.
Floyd Dean-Shannon, just three months into his job at Delta Airlines, noticed a woman shaking before her flight from Charlotte to New York even took off. The unidentified passenger was visibly nervous, flinching at every sound the aircraft made.
Dean-Shannon started explaining each noise in what fellow passenger Molly Simonson Lee described as "the warmest, calmest tone." But halfway through the flight, when the woman began fighting back tears, he went further.
He sat down on the floor of the plane and held her hand. He stayed there, offering comfort and kindness, for the remainder of the flight.
"His tone was so kind and soothing," Lee told Upworthy after witnessing the entire exchange from her seat. She was so moved by what she saw that she posted about it on Facebook and started a GoFundMe for Dean-Shannon that raised over $5,000.

The Cleveland Clinic estimates that approximately 25 million Americans suffer from aerophobia, an extreme fear of flying. Most of them would probably love to have Dean-Shannon on their next flight.
His kindness didn't stop with one passenger. Dean-Shannon also noticed another traveler celebrating a birthday and sang to her, creating a makeshift "cake" from snacks he gathered around the cabin.
Sunny's Take
The image of Dean-Shannon sitting on the airplane floor, looking up at a frightened stranger with reassurance and care, captures something we don't see enough: someone going completely out of their way for another human being. He could have done the minimum, offered a quick reassurance, and moved on with his duties. Instead, he gave this woman his time, his presence, and his genuine compassion.
Lee said it best: "It was obvious he is just a good, kind soul who shares that generously with everyone he encounters." In our rush-everywhere, look-at-your-phone world, Dean-Shannon reminds us that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply be present for someone who's struggling.
Comments poured in from people who had flown with him, each echoing the same sentiment: this man makes everyone around him feel seen and valued.
Small acts of human connection like this one prove that empathy still exists, even in the cramped aisles and stressful environment of modern air travel.
