Florida Community Rallies for Cancer Survivor's Recovery

For years, Hannah Jankowski has been the first person to show up for children battling cancer in Flagler County, Florida. Now, after developing a serious infection in her prosthetic knee from childhood treatment, the community she's served is rallying to help her through a challenging recovery.

Hannah recently rushed to the emergency room with severe pain in the leg where she had surgery during her cancer battle years ago. Doctors discovered an infection in her prosthetic knee that requires immediate intervention.

On August 4, surgeons will remove the infected prosthetic and replace it temporarily with a straight rod infused with antibiotics. The temporary implant will stay in place for approximately two months while her body fights the infection.

The recovery presents an unusual challenge. Hannah must keep her leg completely straight, elevated, and non-weight-bearing throughout the healing process, making normal transportation impossible.

She'll need to travel lying down with her leg fully extended to reach doctor's appointments, physical therapy sessions, and any emergency medical visits. A standard car simply won't work.

Live Like Cameron, the local organization where Hannah volunteers as part of the "Flagler Warriors" group, is searching for a van or RV that can accommodate her unique needs. Co-founder Melisa Fulling is asking residents and rental companies to donate or discount a vehicle for the two-month period.

The Ripple Effect

Hannah's impact on Flagler County's childhood cancer community runs deep. She attends events, encourages young patients, and volunteers her time to remind families facing the same battle she once fought that hope exists on the other side.

"If you've ever met Hannah, you know she is so much more than a childhood cancer survivor," Fulling explained. "She has become an inspiration to so many of the children facing childhood cancer."

The request for help has touched the community that's watched Hannah give so generously over the years. Her decade of service, coming after her own victory over cancer, created countless moments of comfort for families in their darkest hours.
