Florida Man Rescues Mom and 3 Kids From Submerged Car

When Casey Curtis saw a car plunge into a Florida canal on February 8, he made a choice that changed everything for one family.

Shyeniqua Wilkins was driving with her three children when she suddenly suffered a seizure. Her car veered off the road and plunged into the water, trapping the family inside as it began to sink.

With her mother unconscious, Wilkins' 8-year-old daughter became the family's first hero. She held her younger siblings above water and screamed for help as the car filled around them.

Curtis had been driving on the same road moments before. He spotted the crash in his rearview mirror and immediately turned his car around.

Without pausing to think about the risk, Curtis jumped into the canal. He pulled all three children from the vehicle and got them safely to shore, then dove back in to help Wilkins. He held her head above water until paramedics arrived.

Days later, Wilkins woke up in intensive care and learned what had happened. When she finally met Curtis in person, her gratitude poured out.

"I'm so thankful and grateful for you," she told him through tears. "You don't want to be a hero, but hey, I'm sorry. You're the hero of my life."

Wilkins spent several days recovering in the hospital. All three of her children emerged from the ordeal safe and healthy, thanks to Curtis's quick action.

The timing still amazes Wilkins. "Just think, if he would have never turned around," she said. "Me and my kids would not be breathing right now."

The experience sparked something deeper for Wilkins beyond physical recovery. She'd stopped attending church and had drifted from her faith, but nearly losing her children changed her perspective completely.

"Everybody doesn't get a second chance at life, and he gave that to me and my kids," she said, referring to both God and Curtis.

Curtis is now considered part of the Wilkins family, a bond forged in the most terrifying moments imaginable and sealed by an act of pure courage.
