Florida Nonprofit Needs Puppy Raisers for Service Dogs

Imagine cuddling adorable puppies while helping someone regain their independence.

Dogs Inc., a Palmetto nonprofit, is searching for volunteers willing to open their homes to puppies destined to change lives. These aren't just any puppies. They'll grow up to become guide dogs for people with vision loss and service dogs for veterans, all provided at no cost to recipients.

Jenni Scamardo, Director of Puppy Raising Services, brought a special guest named Oatmeal to ABC7 News to spread the word. "We are always looking for more puppy raisers to join us," she said.

The role is simple but meaningful. Volunteer puppy raisers bring a young dog into their home and provide the socialization and foundational skills needed before the puppy returns for advanced training. The goal is exposing puppies to the world around them and building the confidence they'll eventually need as working dogs.

Scamardo is honest about the commitment. "It is a lot of work. Raising a puppy is a commitment," she said. "Without puppy raisers, we can't fulfill our mission."

The good news? The opportunity is more flexible than many people realize. Volunteers can choose to raise a puppy for three, six, or 12 months. They can also raise individually, partner with a co-raiser, or join a team.

Dogs Inc. doesn't leave volunteers hanging. The organization provides a starter kit with a leash, collar, initial food, and crate. They cover approved veterinary expenses and supply heartworm and parasite preventatives. Raisers also receive training and ongoing support, including puppy kindergarten and monthly classes.

Every puppy raiser becomes part of a transformation story. The puppy you teach to sit calmly in a restaurant might one day guide a veteran through a crowded airport or help someone navigate their neighborhood independently. It's temporary work with permanent impact.

Dogs Inc. is holding a Puppy Raiser Info Session on Friday, September 18, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at its Palmetto campus. The session explains responsibilities, training support, and what to expect throughout the experience.
