Florida Woman Waits 3 Hours to Save Stranded Sea Turtle

Clara Macciocchi was running along a Florida beach on February 6 when she spotted something that stopped her in her tracks: a green sea turtle struggling to keep its head above the waves.

Most people would have snapped a photo and kept moving. Macciocchi called the Clearwater Marine Aquarium animal helpline and stayed put.

"That is not normal, and I need to call someone," she said in a TikTok video that captured the entire rescue. The aquarium's stranding coordinators asked her to wait with the turtle until they could arrive.

What she thought would be a quick wait turned into a three-hour vigil. As temperatures dropped and the sun set, Macciocchi watched the turtle grow weaker.

When the turtle tried swimming back to sea but couldn't, Macciocchi faced a tough choice. Touching sea turtles is illegal under the Endangered Species Act, but she could see the animal was in danger of drowning.

"I think this is illegal, but I think I have to grab her," she said before gently moving the turtle away from the waves. When she called the aquarium back, they confirmed she'd done the right thing.

Macciocchi sat shivering on the beach as darkness fell. A friend eventually arrived with blankets, coats, and pizza to help her wait it out.

There's something remarkable about choosing discomfort to help another living being. While Macciocchi sat in the cold, over 30 other sea turtles were washing up along Florida's coast during the same cold snap. Her simple decision to stay made all the difference for one of them.

When rescuers finally arrived after three hours, they promised the turtle would spend the night in a warm tank. Macciocchi later learned her "little buddy" was actually male and named him Ladon after Greek mythology.

The road to recovery wasn't quick. Ladon needed antibiotics for an infection and spent weeks in rehabilitation at the aquarium while his caregivers tested his foraging skills and monitored his bloodwork.

Macciocchi visited twice to check on him. On her second visit in March, staff told her Ladon was improving but still needed more time to heal.

On May 28, more than three months after that cold February night, Ladon swam back into the ocean alongside Hermes, another turtle from the same cold snap. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium confirmed both turtles were healthy and cleared for release.

"You saved his life," one TikTok user wrote beneath Macciocchi's original video. Thousands of others followed Ladon's journey from that freezing beach to his triumphant return home.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is simply refuse to leave.
