Ford's New Electric Van Targets Budget-Conscious Fleets

😊 Feel Good

Ford just unveiled the Transit City, an affordable all-electric van designed for urban delivery drivers and small businesses who need reliable zero-emission transport without the premium price tag. Launching later this year at an estimated $47,000, it could make electric fleets accessible to thousands more companies.

Getting small businesses into electric vehicles just became a lot easier.

Ford Pro announced the Transit City, a new all-electric van stripped down to essentials to keep costs low while still delivering where it counts. The model targets delivery drivers, tradespeople, and service providers working in cities who want to go electric but found existing options too expensive.

The Transit City packs a 56 kWh battery that delivers 254 kilometers of range. Ford says that more than doubles what 90 percent of vans in this class drive daily, making it perfect for urban routes with overnight charging.

Charging happens fast enough to fit real work schedules. Plugging in overnight at 11 kW takes 4.5 hours from 10 to 80 percent. During a lunch break, a DC fast charger delivers the same charge in just 33 minutes at 87 kW.

The van comes in two panel van sizes plus a chassis cab version. The larger L2H2 model stretches 5.29 meters long and hauls three Euro pallets in eight cubic meters of cargo space with 1,275 kilograms of payload capacity. Even the smaller L1H1 version fits three pallets despite its compact size.

Ford kept prices down by making every Transit City identical with no optional extras. Each van includes durable cargo flooring, lashing rings, heated seats, and a 12-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration. The heated seats actually work better than cabin heating for drivers who jump in and out up to 200 times daily.

The Ripple Effect

This launch matters beyond just one new model. Ford partnered with Chinese manufacturer Jiangling Motors to build the Transit City, allowing them to offer competitive pricing against newer Chinese brands entering Europe. By keeping the price point between their premium e-Transit Custom and smaller e-Transit Courier models, Ford gives budget-conscious businesses a reason to stay with a trusted brand rather than jumping to unfamiliar competitors.

The strategy also keeps more small businesses in the electric transition. When the e-Transit Custom starts at nearly $59,000, many delivery services and tradespeople simply can't justify the switch. An estimated $47,000 price tag changes that calculation, potentially bringing thousands more commercial vehicles into the zero-emission future.

Orders open in the second quarter with deliveries starting by year end. Ford's ecosystem integration, including their Pro Telematics fleet management system, means businesses get affordable electric vans that plug seamlessly into tools they already use.

Making electric commercial vehicles accessible to smaller operators accelerates the entire transportation transition.
