Fort Mill Students Top South Carolina in Academic Excellence

Students in Fort Mill, South Carolina, are showing the rest of the state what's possible when schools invest in great teaching. The Fort Mill School District has outperformed every traditional public school system in South Carolina on newly released state assessments, setting records across elementary, middle, and high school levels.

The numbers tell a powerful story. More than 81 percent of students met or exceeded expectations in English Language Arts, up nearly 10 percentage points in just three years. Math proficiency climbed to 73.7 percent, while science scores reached 76.1 percent.

High schoolers showed even more impressive gains. Nearly 90 percent of Fort Mill students scored C or higher on the English II state exam, compared to just 69 percent statewide. In U.S. History, 78.6 percent hit that mark while only 49 percent of students across South Carolina did the same.

The district also reached number one in the state for career readiness. Nearly 80 percent of Fort Mill high schoolers scored as "Career Ready" on the WIN Learning assessment, far surpassing the state average of 52 percent.

Advanced Placement participation exploded too. Students took 3,001 AP exams this year, a 67 percent jump from 2022. Five subjects saw perfect 100 percent pass rates, including English Literature, Statistics, and U.S. Government.

District leaders credit one key decision for these gains: hiring more teachers to provide personalized support. That investment paid off especially for students from low-income families, who saw some of the biggest improvements.

The Ripple Effect

When schools focus on what works, every student benefits. Math proficiency among economically disadvantaged students jumped from 46.6 to 50.6 percent in one year. Their average SAT scores climbed 21 points, from 951 to 972.

Biology scores for this group soared from 47.2 to 58.2 percent. English II proficiency rose to 80.4 percent, and U.S. History scores reached 63.7 percent, up from 56.9 percent the previous year.

These gains show that achievement gaps can shrink when districts make strategic investments in teaching talent. Fort Mill's success creates a roadmap for other communities looking to lift all students, regardless of their economic background.
