Foundation Donates $500K, Ends Mission After 9 Years

After nine years of transforming grief into hope, a small New Jersey foundation built in memory of a courageous teen has donated $500,000 to children in need throughout Middlesex County before concluding its charitable mission.

The Marisa Tufaro Foundation was established in 2017, six months after 13-year-old Marisa passed away from a rare cancer. Despite surviving six open-heart surgeries and a heart transplant for a complex cardiac defect, and spending more than two years hospitalized, Marisa remained an honor roll student who lived a vibrant life that inspired everyone around her.

Her parents, Cyndi and Greg Tufaro, channeled their loss into action. They created a foundation that would help other children facing similar battles and keep their daughter's indomitable spirit alive.

The foundation's impact stretched far beyond the half-million-dollar mark. Through dozens of community initiatives, volunteers collected thousands of toys, winter coats, baby supplies, children's books, and school supplies for families in need.

The nonprofit awarded $41,500 in scholarships to 57 high school seniors and sent 34 younger students to a weeklong summer art camp at Rutgers University. From tiny lemonade stands to league-wide all-star games, the community rallied around Marisa's memory.

The foundation supported the very hospitals that cared for Marisa, including Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Boston Children's Hospital. They created boardwalk-themed family fun nights for pediatric patients and their families, bringing joy to children enduring difficult treatments.

The Ripple Effect

What started as one family's way of coping with unimaginable loss became a movement that touched countless lives across New Jersey and beyond. The foundation received the Edison Chamber of Commerce's 2024 Organization of the Year Award and was featured in USA TODAY and the Boston Globe.

Hundreds of fundraisers, from suburban street corners to professional sporting events, demonstrated how one girl's courage could unite an entire region. Student athletes participated in tournaments, families hosted charity events, and thousands of volunteers donated their time.

"While no parent can ever fill the void left by the loss of a child, the extraordinary love and support the community poured into the foundation brought us immeasurable comfort," the Tufaros said. The relationships they formed and the difference they made together became among the foundation's greatest gifts.

After nearly a decade of service, the foundation has fulfilled its mission. Marisa's legacy of helping children in need will continue through the thousands of lives her foundation touched and the community of compassion it built.
