Four Illinois Students Win Top STEM Scholarships

Four University of Illinois students are tackling some of the biggest challenges in science and engineering, and they just earned national recognition for it. Sophomore Maxwell Mamishev and juniors George Bayliss, Peter Golemis, and Cliff Sun received Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, the most prestigious undergraduate award in science, technology, engineering, and math.

The $7,500 scholarships recognize students with exceptional potential to advance research in their fields. This year, only 454 students nationwide received the honor from a pool of 1,485 nominees.

Mamishev, an electrical engineering student from Seattle, is developing intelligent power systems for extreme environments like space. He's already patented assistive devices for people who are blind or have low vision, and he's now creating artificial intelligence methods for radiological safety.

Sun, a math and physics double major from Buffalo, is working toward building a full-scale quantum computer. His recent research solved a problem that had stumped the nanowire community for 20 years.

Golemis, studying electrical engineering and physics, focuses on condensed matter systems and has been researching single-atom thick graphene since high school. Bayliss, a physics and math student from Arlington Heights, explores the intersection of algebraic geometry and homotopy theory while mentoring other student researchers.

The Ripple Effect

Illinois leads the nation with 13 Goldwater Scholars over the past three years, more than any other university. The competition on campus is so fierce that director David Schug says the hardest part is earning one of the coveted nominations from Illinois itself.

These students aren't just collecting awards. They're building technologies for disaster relief communication systems, advancing quantum computing, creating educational tools for future engineers, and developing systems for space exploration.

Their research spans from the smallest scales imaginable (single atoms) to the vastness of space, from helping people navigate daily life to preparing for future disasters. Each project addresses real-world problems with innovative solutions.
