France and Portugal Launch Friendship Treaty for Stronger EU

Two European neighbors just took their partnership to the next level with a treaty designed to benefit millions of people on both sides of the border.

France and Portugal officially launched their Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation this month, a sweeping agreement that touches everything from military defense to small business support. French President Emmanuel Macron and Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro signed the deal in Porto last year, pledging to work together "in the service of the French and the Portuguese, and of a Europe that decides for itself."

The treaty tackles real infrastructure challenges head on. After a major blackout hit Spain and Portugal last year, both countries recognized the urgent need to better connect the Iberian Peninsula to European energy networks. The new agreement commits France and Portugal to developing these connections while securing the best possible European funding.

Defense cooperation gets a major upgrade too, with both nations focusing on protecting critical infrastructure and fighting cyber threats together. The treaty also encourages their defense industries to work more closely, strengthening security for both countries.

The Ripple Effect

The economic impact could reshape communities across both nations. France already ranks as Portugal's third largest trading partner, but the relationship is evolving in exciting ways. Carlos Pereira, who runs Lusojornal, the leading Portuguese media outlet in France, sees the transformation firsthand.

"It's a spectacular development: some Portuguese towns are seeing French investment coming in, and, what's new, Portuguese companies are setting up in France," he says. The treaty specifically supports small and medium businesses making these cross-border moves while promoting sustainable ocean economy projects in the Atlantic.

The human connection runs deep. Portugal's community in France numbers 1.7 million people, making them the third largest foreign group in the country. Between 30,000 and 50,000 French nationals call Portugal home. The treaty aims to strengthen educational ties by supporting teacher recruitment and encouraging students to study in both countries.

Regular high level meetings between the two governments will keep the partnership moving forward, turning promises into real results for families and businesses.

This treaty joins similar agreements France has built with Germany, Italy, and Poland, creating a network of close partnerships that strengthen the entire European Union.
