France Plans 20% Clean Energy Boost by 2035

France is supercharging its transition away from fossil fuels with a bold new energy plan that could reshape how millions of Europeans power their lives.

The country announced Friday it will boost electricity production from nuclear plants and renewable sources by 20% over the next decade. Finance Minister Roland Lescure revealed the government will soon publish an electrification plan to accelerate the shift, including support for electric vehicles and other green technology.

The newly passed energy planning law sets a clear target: France aims to produce between 650 and 693 terawatt-hours of clean electricity by 2035, up from 540 TWh today. To put that in perspective, that's enough extra power to supply millions of additional homes and businesses without burning a single extra drop of oil.

The plan includes an exciting push for electric transportation. France expects 7 million electric vehicles cruising its streets by 2035, a fivefold increase from current numbers. The government plans to maintain subsidies for corporate EV fleets and explore other incentives to make clean transportation accessible.

Currently, 60% of France's energy consumption comes from oil and gas. The new plan flips that equation, aiming for 70% of energy consumption to come from decarbonized electricity within a decade.

Finance Minister Lescure emphasized the plan is both ambitious and achievable, with state support coming at a reasonable cost to public finances. The government plans to meet with industry leaders this year to discuss budget details for 2027, ensuring businesses and consumers have the support they need to make the switch.
