Free Therapy Brings Speech Help to Rural Parkinson's Patients

✨ Faith Restored

Rural Parkinson's patients in Wyoming and Colorado now have free access to specialized speech therapy from their own homes. The SPEAK OUT! program connects them with graduate student clinicians through telehealth, removing the barrier of long-distance travel.

Patients with Parkinson's disease in rural Wyoming used to drive hours just to access specialized speech therapy. Now they can receive expert care from their living rooms, completely free of charge.

Metro State University Denver launched a SPEAK OUT! Therapy & Research Center in 2023, expanding to serve Wyoming patients in 2024. The program provides no-cost speech therapy in English or Spanish to 25 new Parkinson's patients each year across both states.

Victor Menghetti from Jackson knows the struggle firsthand. Diagnosed in 2019, he had traveled as far as Pennsylvania for treatment and noticed his voice growing softer over time. When SPEAK OUT! visited his local support group last year, he signed up immediately.

The program pairs patients with graduate student clinicians supervised by licensed speech-language pathologists. Patients complete eight to twelve individual sessions over four to six weeks, then join weekly virtual group sessions to maintain their progress.

"Through the exercises, I learned how to speak with intent and not shout," Menghetti said. The therapy focuses on helping people project their voice and speak deliberately, which helps them regain and retain vocal abilities lost to the disease.

Parkinson's affects everyone differently, causing tremors, muscle stiffness, and balance problems. It also impacts speech, making voices quieter and harder to understand. There's no cure, and roughly 1,400 to 1,700 people in Wyoming live with the condition.

The beauty of the program lies in its accessibility. Licensed clinicians in both Wyoming and Colorado deliver care through telehealth, eliminating hours of driving. The pay-it-forward payment model means no insurance paperwork or out-of-pocket costs for patients.

The Ripple Effect

The program creates wins beyond individual patients. Graduate students gain crucial clinical experience while providing life-changing care. Virtual therapy groups have built lasting friendships among participants who understand each other's challenges.

Clinical educator Alissa Allison emphasizes how the program adapts to each person's unique needs. "It's so malleable and so flexible to meet people's communication needs," she said.

For rural patients facing progressive disease, speaking clearly means maintaining independence and connection. This program delivers both, one intentional word at a time.
