French Artist Creates Giant Vanishing Murals in Swiss Alps

A French artist is turning Swiss mountain slopes into massive, temporary canvases that celebrate childhood dreams before vanishing back into nature.

Guillaume Legros, known as Saype, has created enormous frescoes across the peaks of Villars-Gryon-Diablerets, a Swiss ski resort. The paintings, some stretching hundreds of feet, depict children at play, reaching for clouds, and drawing their own worlds.

What makes these artworks remarkable isn't just their size. Saype paints them using only biodegradable materials like chalk and charcoal, ensuring they leave no environmental footprint as they fade.

"This is part of a series that began four years ago, where I've been crafting a story that spans several years," Saype explains. "It's usually the children who, year after year, develop or create the story themselves."

His latest piece marks a first: color. Located at Bretaye pass, a fresco shows a child drawing the sun and clouds, with vibrant hues reflecting the sky above.

"Kids have been inspired by the cosmos, by adventures, and by their observations," Saype says. "For the first time, they're putting that into drawings, and the drawings come to life."

Creating art on mountainsides comes with unique challenges. Saype battles unpredictable weather, steep slopes, and racing thunderstorms while working on pieces that can take days to complete.

From New York to Nairobi, Saype's vanishing artworks have appeared on grass, earth, sand, and snow worldwide. Each piece deliberately disappears to emphasize both environmental fragility and the temporary beauty of childhood wonder.

His work reminds us that imagination has no limits. By placing these massive paintings where children and families hike and play, Saype creates moments where art, nature, and possibility intersect.

The frescoes' impermanence isn't a flaw but their greatest strength. As grass grows and rain falls, nature slowly reclaims the mountainside, proving that beauty doesn't need to last forever to matter.

"I love that moment because, ultimately, it's when nature reclaims what I've created," Saype says. The current works should remain visible through August before the predicted storms speed their natural fadeout.
