French Family Rescued After 16 Hours Adrift in Thai Waters

Against all odds, a 50-year-old French father and his sons, ages five and seven, survived more than 16 hours floating in the Gulf of Thailand after their jet ski capsized just minutes into their ride.

The family rented a jet ski from a local operator on Koh Samui, a popular resort island, around 5pm on Thursday. When they didn't return at the agreed time, the operator immediately alerted local rescuers and provincial authorities, setting a search in motion.

Rescuers found the family Friday morning at 10am, clinging to their nearly submerged jet ski. The father and both boys wore life jackets throughout the entire ordeal, keeping them afloat through the long night.

"We found them exhausted after swallowing a lot of seawater," said local government official Amorn Chomchoey. "They were pale, especially the boys."

Rescue footage shows one young boy perched on the jet ski's only visible section while his father floated nearby. Rescuers can be heard shouting encouragement as they pulled the family to safety and provided water.

The Bright Side

Despite spending an entire night at sea, all three family members were released from the hospital shortly after their rescue. The quick action of the jet ski operator, who raised the alarm when the family didn't return on time, likely saved their lives.

The family's decision to wear life jackets proved critical to their survival. Those flotation devices kept them safe through darkness, exhaustion, and the challenge of keeping two young children calm during an unimaginable situation.

Investigators are looking into why the jet ski capsized after just 15 minutes of operation. The father, who told officials he was an experienced jet ski driver, and his family have already decided to continue their Thai vacation.

Their remarkable survival shows how proper safety equipment and swift emergency response can turn a potential tragedy into a story of resilience.
