French Firefighters Adopt Kitten Rescued From Wildfire Bin

A kitten rescued from a bin during devastating wildfires has found his forever home with the very firefighters who saved his life.

The tiny orange tabby was discovered on July 31 by a firefighter responding to wildfires in the Gironde area of southwestern France. Weighing barely 309 grams and alone in a bin, the kitten needed immediate care.

The firefighters at Bassens station near Bordeaux wanted to adopt him right away. Instead, they made the thoughtful choice to let him spend six weeks with Les Chats'Pitres de la Presqu'île, a local cat charity, so he could develop proper social skills around other cats.

On September 14, the kitten officially joined the fire station. Named Saumos after the commune where he was found, he now weighs a healthy 1.2kg and has been described as calm and sociable.

All 94 firefighters at the station will share responsibility for their newest teammate. He has his own basket and the crew created a tracking system to monitor his meals and prevent overfeeding by his many enthusiastic carers.

Firefighter Chaïb Bouglala explained the deeper purpose behind Saumos's presence. "After a difficult intervention, if we can't talk to our colleagues and we need some cuddles, we'll come and talk to Saumos," he told France 3.

The little rescue has captured hearts far beyond the fire station. His Instagram account has gathered nearly 18,000 followers who follow his adventures at the station.

The public response has been overwhelming. The fire station has received messages of support, drawings from children, bags of cat food, and other donations for their furry firefighter.

In their first Instagram post, Saumos's carers wrote that he was "discovering his new home" and settling in beautifully. The kitten who started life weighing less than a can of soup now has 94 protectors and thousands of fans cheering him on.
