French National Freed After 2.5 Years in Malaysian Prison

A French man who faced possible execution in Malaysia is finally going home after a court cleared him of all drug charges Tuesday.

Tom Félix, 34, was acquitted by Malaysia's High Court after spending nearly two and a half years behind bars. The judge ruled that prosecutors failed to prove Félix had control or possession of the drugs he was accused of holding.

"The accused is, therefore, released and acquitted," Judge Evawani Farisyta Mohammad announced in the Alor Setar courtroom. Félix, wearing white and handcuffed, visibly brightened as he heard the decision that would save his life.

The former Veolia executive and his Malaysian business partner were arrested in 2023 after police found cannabis in the shared home where they lived. Félix maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, despite facing eight separate drug-related charges.

The stakes could not have been higher. If convicted, Félix faced either the death penalty or a combined sentence of 104 years in prison, 54 strokes of the cane, and heavy fines.

His parents, Jean Luc and Sylvie Félix, embraced in the courtroom after the ruling. "We are very happy, relieved," Sylvie told reporters. "It's finally the end of a nightmare."

The couple noticed their son had lost considerable weight during his detention. They now hope to bring him back to France quickly and safely.

The Bright Side

While Malaysia maintains strict drug laws with capital punishment for large quantities of narcotics, the country has been softening its approach. No executions have been carried out since 2018, and death sentences are no longer mandatory.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said he was "immensely relieved" by the acquittal. He had met with Félix's parents twice during their son's detention and confirmed Tom would be able to return home to France.

Félix's lawyer, François Zimeray, called it "the end of a very long nightmare" for both Tom and his family, who "held strong against the temptation of despair."

After 895 days of uncertainty and fear, Tom Félix can finally reunite with his family and rebuild the life that was taken from him.
