French Space Firms Partner to Clean Up Earth's Orbit

Space is getting crowded, and two French companies just announced a partnership that could help clean it up.

Exotrail and Astroscale France revealed plans on January 28 to test new technology for safely removing dead satellites from low Earth orbit. The mission would demonstrate how different spacecraft can work together to guide defunct satellites back to Earth, where they burn up harmlessly in the atmosphere.

The project is still awaiting final approval from the French government, with a decision expected by summer 2026. If greenlit, the mission would launch by 2030 aboard a commercial European satellite.

What makes this partnership special is that these two companies could easily be competitors. Exotrail specializes in satellite mobility systems, while Astroscale has already mastered the delicate dance of approaching and capturing objects in space. Instead of racing against each other, they chose to work together.

"On paper, we could appear as competitors, and that's true, but this is the time for alliances," said Jean-Luc Maria, CEO of Exotrail. "It will be in everyone's interest to join forces in order to accelerate."

The collaboration builds on a 2025 study funded by France's national space agency CNES through the France 2030 recovery program. Exotrail is also investing its own money to develop the new capabilities.

Maria explained that his company already spent a decade perfecting propulsion systems for their service vehicles. Rather than spending another 10 years developing proximity operation technology from scratch, partnering with Astroscale fast-tracks their ability to offer complete debris removal services.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership signals a shift in the space industry toward cooperation over competition. As thousands of satellites launch each year, the risk of collisions increases, creating dangerous debris that threatens working satellites, space stations, and future missions.

The companies envision this as the first step in a multi-year collaboration that could establish France as a leader in orbital cleanup services. Success could open the door for similar partnerships worldwide, creating a commercial market for keeping space sustainable.

By 2030, this test mission could prove that removing space junk isn't just technically possible but commercially viable. That matters for everyone who depends on satellites for GPS, weather forecasting, communications, and climate monitoring.
